[ARCHIVED] Roseville Earns Improved Fire Insurance Rating

New Fire Engine front

The City of Roseville has received an improved fire insurance rating from the Insurance Services Office (ISO), and that could mean lower insurance premiums for homeowners and businesses in the community.

The City of Roseville’s Public Protection Classification (PPC) will officially be upgraded from Class 3 to Class 2 in April. The improved rating comes on the heels of an extensive assessment in late 2017 by the ISO, which reviews a community’s fire response capabilities every five years. ISO has been the leading source of information about property and casualty insurance risk since 1971. Most insurers use this classification when underwriting and calculating premiums for residential, commercial and industrial properties.

“Achieving a Class 2 rating is due in a large part to both the professional dedication and consistently high standards of our firefighters and command staff,” said Roseville Fire Chief Tim O’Neill. “But we could not have met this standard without the continued support of our elected officials and City Manager, who have supported recent changes to the department, including a new facility, enhanced community outreach programs, and a new staffing transition plan.

“While we are extremely proud of our new Class 2 rating, I’m excited at the possibility of Roseville Fire becoming the State’s first Class 1 department in the coming years. I believe that we are well on our way, and have a solid plan for future programs and services which will provide the community with the best possible services, and position the department to achieve a Class 1 rating.”

ISO classification is the result of an exhaustive and extensive evaluation of the city’s fire protection capabilities and capacities, including firefighting, firefighter training, water supply capacity, dispatching, and community risk reduction.

These critical components are then evaluated against the nationally recognized standards of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

ISO has 10 classifications as part of their PPC, ranging from Class 10 (no fire protection/does not meet ISO minimum criteria) to Class 1 (exemplary and most compliant with national performance standards).

"The Roseville Fire Department, under the leadership of Chief O’Neill, has been focused in its pursuit to provide the residents and businesses of the City of Roseville with the best possible protection services,” City Manager Patrick Trudgeon said. “It’s gratifying to see that the hard work of our firefighters and Fire Department leadership is paying dividends for both the city and our residents.”

The Roseville Fire Department has been a Class 3-rated community since 1992. However, several significant improvements recently implemented by the department have helped boost the city’s rating, including enhancements to staffing, training, and fire prevention and inspections programs.

"I hear from Roseville businesses and residents all the time praising the service and professionalism of the men and women in our fire department,” City of Roseville Mayor Dan Roe said. “It is no surprise to me to learn of the ISO rating upgrade. This ISO rating confirms what we in Roseville already know about our excellent fire department."

With its most recent improvement in PPC, the City of Roseville is now rated among top 4 percent in the country for fire protection insurance. The improved classification is a reflection of the City of Roseville’s commitment to provide quality fire response and prevention services to its citizens, business owners and guests.
