High School Forensics Class Attempts to Solve the "Case" at Roseville Fire Department

Roseville Fire hosts the Roseville Area High School forensics class

A team of aspiring investigators visited the City of Roseville this week to learn the finer points of fire scene investigation from our pros at Roseville Fire Department.

Roseville firefighters staged a house fire using a specialized burn trailer. Roseville Area High students enrolled in teacher Laura Jansen's forensics class examined the scene of the blaze, collected evidence, and interviewed the homeowner, acted out by Fire Inspector Chris DuBay.

Firefighters show the difference between how different fuels catch fire.Their goal: Determine the cause of the fire and close the case!

Among the damage, the student investigators could see a toppled candle, matches, overloaded power strips, and distinctive burn patterns. But a crucial part of the investigation hinges on the homeowner's story and additional evidence, said Sam Baker, an inspector with Roseville Fire.

"The students really have to ask the right questions," Baker explains.Students investigate the damage of the staged scene.

The teams of students will present their findings and conclusions to Roseville firefighters next week.

"We’re always thrilled to work with students and community members who are curious about our profession," said Assistant Fire Chief Neil Sjostrom. "Plus, we know the students love this hands-on experience."

Hosting forensic students is just one way the City of Roseville collaborates with our local schools. City staff coordinate Fire and Police Explorers clubs at the local schools. Hundreds of fourth graders visit City Hall and the fire and police stations yearly to learn about local government. The Harriet Alexander Nature Center also hosts dozens of field trips.
